McALLEN, Texas - Rigoberto Hernández scored his first two goals of the season to lead the Tigers to a 3-1 victory over the league-leading Rattlers, and San Benito defeated the Hormigas 2-1 to win a share of the top spot of the South Texas Premier Soccer Association Summer League on Saturday at the Springfest soccer fields.
José Delgado added the other tally for the Tigers, while Luis Gómez temporarily equalized the match in the first half for the Rattlers.
The Tigers’ (2-1-0, 7 points) win maintained the team unbeaten and gave it a share of first place after three games of play. Meanwhile, the loss was the first for the Rattlers (2-0-1, 6) this season.
San Benito’s (2-1-0, 7) victory gave it an identical record and goal differential as the Tigers for a share of the league lead in the standings.
In another match, Mission (2-0-1, 6) recovered from its loss to the Rattlers in the previous game to defeat España 3-0 on a pair of scores by Aldo Sánchez and another by Alán Hernández. The win gave Mission a point off the pace of the league-leading Tigers and San Benito and ahead of the Rattlers by goal differential.
The last match of the day saw the incoming Indios squad edge Gatos Negros 1-0 on a goal by Ricky Vargas to win their first three points of the young STXPSA Summer League season.
At the end of three weeks of play, the Tigres and San Benito own the top of the league standings with seven points, followed by Mission and the Rattlers with six points; La Joya (1-1-0, 4) and Gatos Negros (1-1-1, 4); Indios (1-0-0, 3) and España (1-0-2, 3); while Potros (0-0-2), Edcouch (0-0-2) and Hormigas (0-0-3) are still looking for their first points of the season.
In the goal-scoring category, the Rattlers’ Luis Gómez is the league leader with three tallies.
