Rattlers take over first place in STXPSA Summer League
Defeat Mission 3-0 in Week 2

McALLEN, Texas - With three shots the Rattlers defeated Mission 3-0 in the clásico of that city rivalry in the second week of the South Texas Premier Soccer Association 18-and-Under Summer League and took over the first place spot in the standings.

Last week’s hero Luis Gómez put the Rattlers on the board in just the 13th minute of play to take a 1-0 lead. Daniel García added a tally in the 38th minute and Julio Gutiérrez closed out the scoring a minute later to give the Rattlers (2-0-0, 6 points) the victory and first place. The Rattlers remain undefeated along with four other teams.

In another high voltage match, La Joya went toe-to-toe with the Tigers and walked away with a 1-all tie after each team was left with 10 men. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead on José Delgado’s score, but four minutes later Edgar García equalized for La Joya.

Gatos Negros edged Hormigas 1-0 on a goal by Adrián Mejía and España got back on track after last week’s season-opening loss to the Rattlers by defeating Potros 2-0 on a pair of tallies by striker Delber Rivera in the 36th and 42nd minutes.

Finally, San Benito routed Edcouch 5-0 in the fifth match of day. Pedro Sánchez (23’), Ricardo Camacho (25’), Ángel Estrada (50’) and Lucio Del Fierro (55’ y 67’) scored the goals in the Lower Valley squad’s win.

The Rattlers are the league leaders with six points, followed by San Benito (1-1-0, 4 points); Tigers (1-1-0, 4); La Joya (1-1-0, 4); and Gatos Negros (1-1-0, 4).

In the goal-scoring category, five players are tied with two goals each: Delber Rivera (España); Lucio Del Fierro (San Benito); Eduardo Dávila (Mission); Luis Gómez (Rattlers); and José Aranda (Tigres).
