McALLEN, Texas - The South Texas Premier Soccer Association’s 18-and-Under Summer League successfully kicked off its inaugural season on Saturday, May 21 with five matches that were highlighted by the Rattler’s last minute victory over España in the league’s Game of the Week.

Luis Gómez tallied the game winner for the Rattler’s in the last minute of the hard-fought match to give his team a 1-0 victory over España and their first three points of the young season.

"The season kicked off to a great start and we had some very good games in the first week of play," said STXPSA co-organizer Miguel Puente. "We saw some good talent out on the field today. The games were fast-paced and entertaining, but most importantly is that the players had a good time, which is one of our goals aside from the continued development of the players during the off season."

In the inaugural game, Mission came back from a 1-0 first-half deficit to down Potros 4-1 on a pair of goals by Eduardo Dávila, a tally by César Ibáñez and another score by Luis Martínez.

Ibáñez scored the equalizer in the 54th minute and Dávila gave Mission the go-ahead goals in the 60th and 70th minutes. Mauro Martínez scored the game’s and league’s first goal in the 23rd minute of play to give Potros a 1-0 lead.

In other matches, Tigers defeated Hormigas 4-0 after a scoreless first half and Gatos Negros rallied to tie 1-1 with San Benito on a 67th minute goal by José Luis Hernández. La Joya beat Edcouch 2-0.
