McALLEN, Texas - For the second Saturday in a row the rain held up just long enough for the South Texas Premier Soccer Association to complete Week Two of the Elite U-20 League.

Deportivo Álvarez defeated Manny’s Electric 7-3 at the Springfest soccer fields to accumulate six points and preserve the first-place spot in the league table of the Apertura 2009 season by goal differential.

Despite playing with only nine players, Deportivo Álvarez came back from an early 1-0 deficit to defeat Manny’s Electric.

One field over, Starr United opened up a close match with four goals in the last 25 minutes of the game to overwhelm Edinburg 7-2.

Starr United took leads of 2-0 and 3-1 in the first half, but Rigo Chapa put Edinburg back in the game with a 55th minute tally to close within a goal of Edinburg 3-2.

Ten minutes later, Marco Vázquez got back Starr United’s two-goal lead, which opened up flood gates. José Rivera (70’), Jaime Cano (80’) and Héctor Ríos (84’) followed with scores to seal the Red-and-White’s second win in a row. Ríos also scored in the 44th minute.

In the second half, Edcouch-Elsa managed to equalize the match at 2-2 on a pair of scores by Jesús Ortiz (56’ and 67’). However, it was the Hidalgo squad that was able to pull out the victory 20 minutes later on Delgados’s 87th minute tally.

Finalmente, Álvarez Jrs. fue impulsado con cuatro goles de Marcos Ruiz para derrotar 9-4 a Santos Laguna.

Deportivo Álvarez (2-0-0) is the leader of the Elite U-20 League by way of goal differential and six points, while Álvarez Jrs. (2-0-0, 6 pts.) and Starr United (2-0-0. 6) occupy second and third place. Santos Laguna and Valley View (1-0-1) hold the fourth and fifth place slots, both with three points, while Manny’s Electric, Edinburg and Edcouch-Elsa (0-0-2) have yet to notch a point in the standings.

In the goal-scoring category, Deportivo Álvarez’s striker Wladimir Ayala is the leader with seven tallies. Ayala scored five on Saturday against Manny’s Electric.

The Elite U-20 League is the first of its kind in the Rio Grande Valley. The league was established to continue the development of local soccer talent in the area.
