McALLEN, Texas - The rain waited just long enough Saturday afternoon to get in the South Texas Premier Soccer Association’s Elite U-20 League inaugural weekend of matches at the Springfest soccer fields.
Four teams claimed big wins in the first week of the league’s Apertura (Opening) 2009 season.
Deportivo Alvarez took the top spot in the league standings with a 10-0 victory over Edcouch. Ex Sharyland standout Fabian Silva scored six goals in the game.
Álvarez Jrs. defeated Valley View Dos Ríos 7-2 to slide into the second-place slot by way of goal differential.
In the STXPSA’s Game of the Week, Starr United edged Manny’s Electric 2-1 in a the tightest match of the opening weekend. The winning goals were scored by Starr United’s José Rivera (48’ and 58’). Mario Zamora cut the lead in the 68th minute for Manny’s Electric.
Meanwhile, Santos Laguna notched a 5-3 comeback win over Edinburg. Santos wasted a 3-1 lead when Sergio Romo (69’ and 77’) tied the game at 3-all.
Santos woke up after Edinburg’s game-tying goal and came back to reclaim the lead in less tan a minute on a Christian Reyes (77’) tally and Alán Altamirano insured the victory in the 89th minute to take the three points.
The Elite U-20 League is the first of its kind in the Rio Grande Valley. The league was established to continue the development of local soccer talent in the area.
